Winter Weather Safety

Although winter may be nearing an end, the winter weather seems to be sticking around. Unfortunately, outdoor worksites tend to be impacted the most during the colder weather. Thankfully, with proper winter weather safety, there are ways to mitigate these concerns.

Winter Challenges for Crane Operators

A combination of weather difficulties in the weather can impact a job and its completion. These characteristics of winter may include:

  • Rain

  • Wind

  • Cold temperatures

Everyone onsite needs to follow the proper precautions so that everyone can remain safe without inhibiting the working schedule in order to continue operations during winter.

What to Look for In Winter Months

When operating large equipment, there are a few things to keep an eye on in order to avoid impacting your work schedule long term. These nuances include:

  • Making sure to assess weather conditions and be on the lookout for any potential dangers

  • Understanding how rain affects crane safety, including waterlogging, limited visibility, and damaging equipment

  • Understanding how wind affects crane safety, including sudden gusts

  • Understanding how cold weather affects crane safety, including cognitive function, slip risks, and even mobility

  • Understanding how visibility affects crane safety and how winter weather impacts visibility

While we don’t see much snow and ice in Southern California, this winter has proven otherwise. It’s also critical for crane operators to understand weather safety in these conditions, albeit their experience operating in them may be limited.
