NCCCO Practical Exam Tasks
Each task you will be required to perform during your NCCCO practical exam will be scored based on performance and how long it takes to complete the task. Here is a list of what tasks to expect:
Pre-Operational (Shift) Inspection
Place Chain in Stop Circle
Follow Hand Signals
Place Ball in Barrels
Negotiate Zigzag Corridor with Test Weight
Safe Shutdown and Securing Procedures
Pre-Operational Inspection
Identifying standard pre-operational inspection items (five)
1 min describing how to perform the pre-operational inspection
Place Ball in Stop Circle
1 min 30 sec is the optimal time
Raise the ball and chain from its starting position and move to the stop circle
To clear all obstacles and personnel you must keep the ball at least ten feet off the ground at all times
You must place the chain on the ground within the stop circle and it must remain there once the ball and chain reach the stop circle
Follow Hand Signals
No time limit
Examiner will guide you back to the starting circle using B30.5 hand signals
At the start circle you will be tested on four of the following signals:
Raise the boom, lower the load, and stop
Hoist and stop
Lower the boom and stop
Swing and stop
Raise the boom and stop
Lower the load and stop
Lower the boom, raise the load, and stop
Lower the load slowly and stop
Place Ball in Barrels
3 min 30 sec is the optimal time for Telescopic Boom (Fixed & Swing)
4 min is the optimal time for Lattice Boom
Bring the ball over and place it inside barrel number one
Once complete, move the ball into barrel number two
Negotiating The Zigzag Corridor
4 min is the optimal time for Telescopic Boom Fixed
3 min is the optimal time for Telescopic Boom Swing and Lattice Boom
Make your way through the zigzag corridor, navigating by:
Hoisting up and down
Booming up or down
Swinging
Keep the test load off of the ground, but not so high that the chain leaves the ground
Safe Shut Down and Securing
No time limit
Complete safe shutdown procedure
Properly shut down the crane
Explain to the examiner what procedures you would take to properly secure the crane at the end of a shift
